Japanese invasion of China
The Japanese invaded China when the Japanese said that the Chinese had fired upon them. Japan then had a full-scale invasion on China. China's most important port, Shanghia and Nanjing, fell to the Japanese. Then the "Raping of Nanking" occured. the japanese killed over 250,000 people after the "Raping of Nanking". -
German's invasion of Poland
The German battleship Schelswig-Holstein opened fire on a Polish garrison of the Westerplatte fort, in what was to become the first military engagement of World War II. About 62 German diviision supported by 1,300 aircraft commenced the invasion of Poland. -
German Blitzkrieg
Germany decided to attack the European countries in short campaigns called Blitzkriegs. They took over the countries of Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Ntherlands, Luxembourg, France, Yugoslavia, and Greece. They took over all these countries in a span of two years. The Blitzkrieg is also known as the Lightning War, becasue of how fast Germany took over the European countries. -
Fall of Paris
Germany's blitzkrieg took over the country of France and other countries fell to Germany also. -
Operation Barbarossa
Nazis and the Axis powers began to invaded the Soviet Union. Soviets were unprepared for the invasion and suffered massive casualties. the Germans were just about to take over Moscow when the Russian winter set in and stopped the advances of the Nazis. After the winter ended, the Germans had suffered by losing more than 775,000 soldiers. -
Pearl Harbor
At the naval base of Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked and killed more than 2,000 American sailors and 1,000 others were injured. The Japanese fighter planes managed to sink 20 U.S. ships and 200 American airplanes. The attack had only lasted two hours. -
Wannsee Conference
The conference was called to discuss the "final solution" for the Jews or the extermination of all the Jews. -
Battle of Midway
Thanks the the code breaking, the U.S. was able to counter attack Japan's plan to sink the last ships that the United States had. This was an important turning point in the Pacific part of the war. -
Battle of Stalingrad
The Soviets success at stopping the Germans from taking over the city of Stalingrad. It marked the turning point for the Soviets and the Allies in Europe. -
Operation Gomorrah
The bombing of Hamburg lasted from July and went all the way to to August. The bombing had left over 1 million homeless and killed 40,000-50,000 civilians. Hitler was concerned that raids similar to this one would lead Germany out of war. -
D-Day
160,000 Allied troops landed on a 50 mile long stretch of beach off the French coast that was heavily fortified by the Nazis. Only 9,000 troops were killed or wounded and 100,000 troops began to sweep across Europe. -
Battle of Bulge
Was fought over the winter moths of 1944-1945. It was the Nazi's last major offensive against the allies in World War two. Hitler tried to split the Allies into two so that their supplies would be cut off. -
Liberation of concentration Camps
The Americans were resonsible for liberating the conentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. The British, French, and the Soviets were also resonsible for liberating many more Concentration camps. -
Operation Thunderclap
1,000 B-17 bombers, assisted with P-51's for protection, attacked the Berlin railway system. The raid was to assist the Soviets on the Oder east of Berlin. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The inavion happened becaus ethe U.S. need a base near the Japanese coast. There was roughly 23,000 Japanese troops on the island in caves, dugouts, tunnels, and underground installations. the U.S. was successful and captured the island and raised the American flag on it. -
Battle of Okinawa
It was the last big Pacific island battle of World War 2. 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth army took on the 130,000 Japanese troops defending the island. Campaign lasted till June 22nd and the Japanese had lost 77,000 troops while the U.S. had only 65,000 casualties and only 14,000 had died. -
VE Day
Victory in Europe over Germany. Winston Churchhill announced over the radio that Germany ceased fire at 2:41. -
Potsdam Declaration
The Potsdam Declaration called for the surrender of Japan during World War 2. United States president Harry S. Truman, Prime Minister Winston Churchill from United Kingdom, and Nationalist Government of China Chiang Kai-shek issued teh document that outined the terms for Japan's surrender. -
Dropping of the Atomic Bombs
A B-29 bomber dropped a single atomic bomb over thecity of Hiroshima, killing 80,000 people. The bomb wiped out 90% ov the city. Radiation exposur efrom the explosion killed tens of thousands of people later. Three days later a second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki killing around 40,000 people. Japan's emperor announced Japan's unconditional surrender after the bombs were dropped. -
VJ Day
Japan had surrendered uncanditionally to the allies, therefore ending World War 2.
