    In 1882, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy had been parties of a secret agreement between them according an alliance.
    The problem was that Italy, entered WW1 in opposition to Germany and Austria-Hungary, so later on retired from this alliance.
    The Ottoman Empire joined on October 29th 1914
    Bulgaria also joined on October 14th 1915

    It started in 1907 with France, Great Britain and Russia.
    Later on, Serbia entered.
    When attacked by Germany, Belgium joined.
    In August 1914 Japan entered aspiring to snitch German colonies of the Pacific.
    In May 1915 Italy joined.
    In March 1916 Portugal entered.
    In June 1916 Romania joined.
    In April 1917 the United States entered.
    In June 1917 Greece joined.
    Also China and some South American countries entered.
  • Cause - Franz Ferdinand Assassination

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was shot and killed by a Serbian man who thought Serbia should control Bosnia instead of Austria.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assasination, was the straw that broke the camel's back in Europe, and because of this Austria-Hungary declared the war to Serbia on 28th July 1914

    Many battles were fought using trench warfare. Long ditches were dug in the ground. Soldiers lived in the trenches and sometimes climbed out to attack. A famous example of trench war was the this battle. Around one million soldiers were killed, wounded or missing.

    On the 11th November 1918, Germany realiced that was in a very bad possition, and couldn't win the war, so had to sign an armistice retiring themselfs as loosers of the war, ending up that way, the big war.
