The Germans couldn't really drop it during the day, they would just be shot down with Anti-Aircraft turrets. So they dropped them at night but couldn't see where they were hitting because the people would keep all the lights off at night.

    Japan had a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in the morning against the United States naval base in Hawaii. This was the cause of the United Sates joining the war with the Allied Powers.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the internment camps with Executive Order 9066. It was the removal of the Japanese-Americans in the west to prisons after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. About 110,000 people of Japanese heritage who lived on the west coast was sent to one of the camps.

    The battle started on August 23, 1942. This was a major battle of World War 2 in which the Nazi's where fighting the Soviet Union for the city of Stalingrad. Nazi's surrenders because they were dying at a rapid pace during the winter. They were not prepared for the harsh weather.

    An allied invasion of Normandy during World War 2. The term D-Day was used for the day of the actual landing. This was the largest seaborne invasion in history.
  • Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima
    US marines invaded the island of Iwo Jima. The United States plan was to take over the island. 5 days later after they started fighting they raised of the U.S. flag on top of the Mount Suribachi by five U.S. Marines and one U.S. Navy battlefield Hospital Corpsman. There was actually 2 flag rasing and both of them were on the same day. The battle lasted till March 26, 1945.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt dies, Harry S. Truman becomes president
    Franklin D. Roosevelt died after months of poor health and Harry S. Truman was sworn in as President. The U.S. successfully finished World War 2 under Truman.
  • Adolf Hitler’s suicide

    Adolf Hitler commits suicide by gunshot. Later that day his wife Eva Braun also committed suicide by ingesting cyanide.
  • Victory in Europe

    This marks the date when the World War 2 Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender by Germany.

    The Atomic Bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan by the United States. The bombs were dropped by a B-29 Bomber. The Japanese did not surrender after the first bomb, so 3 days later the United States dropped another bomb. These 2 events were the only use of nuclear weapons in war to this day.
