The Battle of the Atlantic
This battle described all of the wars in Atlantic Ocean. Canada set up convoys (groups of 50 - 60 supply ships) that were protected by corvettes (small fast gun boats). Safely escorted 25,000 merchant ships to Britain and 1000s to Russia. -
The Battle of Britain
During the World War 2, Nazi Germany declared the massive air war to Britain. 25% of the pilots in the Royal Air Force (RAF) that defeated the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) were Canadians. Canada helped Britain to shoot down 3000 Nazi planes. Germany lost the war because they didn't get the air supremacy of English Channel and then give up to invade. -
The Battle of Hong Kong
Japan attacked USA at Pearl Harbor. Inexperienced Canadian soldiers protecting Hong Kong for the British. They virtually no chance of victory, but refused to surrender until they were overrun by the enemy. Those who survived the battle became prisoners of war. -
The Air War
Royal Canadian Airforce tried to bomb German cities, factories that make war supplies. It was not very successful because of many Canadian pilots died and factories were not totally destroyed. -
The Dieppe Raid
The Allies wanted to scare the Germans so they would move soldiers away from Russia. Germany already controlled the entire Western of Europe, therefore it was harmful for the allies. They decided to have a short raid of French coastal town of Dieppe. Canadian soldiers helped the British to fight, it was Canada's worst defeat. -
The Battle of Ortona
Operation Husky was the beginning of the attack on Italy. Canadian soldiers were the first to take the island of Sicily. And they captured 650 enemy soldiers.Ortona was key city on the way to capturing Rome.Canada lost over 2300 men, but they used “mouse-holing” technique to capture the city, and blasted holes in walls of buildings to avoid being shot by Germans. -
Canadians on D-Day
Canada’s largest military operation of WW 2. The long-awaited invasion of Northwest Europe, began with Allied landings on the coast of Normandy. The military planners had given Canada a major role on D-Day: to take one of the five designated beaches where Allied forces were to land to begin the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany. The Americans had Utah and Omaha beaches in the west, then came the British at Gold, then the Canadians at Juno Beach and finally the British at Sword on the east. -
Liberation of the Netherlands
The 1st Canadian Corps which had fought so long in Italy had been transferred to Northwest Europe. Two Canadian Army corps would fight side by side for the first time in history. The 2nd Canadian Corps would clear the northeastern Netherlands and the German coast, and the 1st Canadian Corps would deal with the Germans remaining in the western Netherlands north of the Maas. And then Canada freed the Netherlands from the Nazis and gave food to the Dutch people. Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945. -
The Battle of the Pacific
Chinese Canadians had elite commando unit called Force 136. They were used to sabotage Japanese war effort by destroying Japanese weapons, bridges, and railways.Germany had unconditionally surrendered, the Allies could now put all the effort to fighting Japan in Pacific. America wanted to revenge for the Pearl Harbour and then they used the Atomic Bomb to bring the war to a speedy end.
