All nations in Europe wanted to gain more colonies, to expand their lands. Before WW1 started, there already were small arguments between nations about who owned what territories. -

Counrties were in an arms race, building their armies and navies, increasing the number of their weapons, especially Britain and Germany. Germany had the greatest increase in military buildup. -

The countries were engaged in an arms race, trying to improve their weapons, armies, and navies, and all of them wanted to be first in the arms race. When WW1 started, countries had large armies and navies and deadly weapons. -
Assasiantion of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assasinated in Saravejo, Bosnia by Gavrilo Princep, a Serbian nationalist. This led to Austria-Hungary giving Serbia an ultimatum, which it declined. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Serbia's ally, Russia, declared war on Austria-Hungary, whose ally, Germany, declared war in Russia, and then all the other allied countries got involved as well, beginning World War 1. -

Negotiations of the Treaty of Versailles
The treaty had angered the German people, who thought that it was unfair to Germany. That is why they followed Adolph Hitler, who promised to get rid of the treaty.
Germans were angered that they were forced to take full blame for World War 1.
Hitler wanted to gain Germany's land back.
The reparations killed Germany's economy. It not only had to rebuild its own country, but also pay millions of dollars to other countries. -

Great Depression
Germany was paying reparations to the European nations, who were paying off war debts to the United States. When the Great Depression hit, all of those payments stopped. The depression spread to Europe because the U.S. cut down on its loans. Germany was in poverty, which caused anger among German people at U.S., Britain, and France. The poverty and anger allowed Ho=itler to rise to power because he promised he would change the conditions, help improve the economy, get rid of the treaty. -
Great Depression spreads to Europe.
America cut down on its loans to Europe, which brought the depression there. Germany's economy, though already bad after WW1 and the payment of reparations, worsened when the depression came to Europe, causing anger among the people. Hitler rose to power because he promised to help the economy and create jobs, which he did do, putting himself in favor of the people.
