Battle of ypres +2
First-time germans used a gas attack and Canadians suffered more than 6000 casualties. This is only a plus 1 because, although Canada lost many soldiers it was our first battle. France was to fight the Germans but they fled because of the gas and a Canadian soldier came with a solution to help them not inhale the gas. This helped Canada gain some reputation in the war (page 134) -
Women Right To Vote +2
Giving women the right to vote was a big step for canada. It all started in Manitoba then every other province followed. This law helped Conscription too since not all provinces had passed the law in 1917. So they made it so you could vote if you were related to a soldier. (Government of Canada, Status of Women Canada. 100th Anniversary of Women's First Right to Vote in Canada. 17 Jan. 2018, cfc-swc.gc.ca/commemoration/cent/index-en.html.) -
Battle of somme -1
The British commander thought he could distract the germans by bombing their trenches 24/7 and hopefully killing then and all their defenses but when they moved up to no man's land they found the germans waiting there. There were 800 casualties and only 68 people showed up the next day. This is a -1 because they lost a lot of soldiers and the commander did not have a solid plan.

Battle of Vimy Ridge +2
The battle of Vimy ridge was an amazing battle for the canadians. The british were unsuccessful in taking a German stronghold at Vimy ridge so they turned to canada to help. This was the first time Canada fought under a Canadian commander. He uses a tactic that took vimy ridge in a very short time. They would start bombarding from behind the frontline and they would push forward and then keep repeating that until they got to the top of the hill and then attacked the Germans. -
Conscription -1
Conscription was a law that forced people to join the military. This is a -1 because a lot of people did not like this and this made canada split up. A lot of violent protesting and rioting broke out. Only thing the Prime Minister did to help solve this is give rights to vote to the wives mother and widows of people serving in the army. (page 143) -
Battle of Passchendaele -2
In 1917 allied troops were ordered to break through German lines they had been holding since 1914 Australian and New Zealand soldiers tried to break through but had no success and had over 100,000 casualties. This is a -2 because this war caused a lot of casualties onto the allied forces. -
The Halifax Explosion -1
The Halifax explosion is the largest man-made explosion. It was caused by 2 ships colliding. This was not good news for Canada since it damaged the port in Halifax which was used a lot. Canada would have to start rebuilding but it would cost them a lot of money and put them more in debt since they're already spending so much money on the war. The USA stepped in and offered Canada some money. -
Armistice +2
Armistice, The end of war. This is when everyone sat down and decided to end the war. This is a +2 because everyone gets to go back home, some people get to shower for the first time. This was amazing news.
