  • Northwest Oridnance

    Congress enacted the northwest ordinance on July 13, 1787. Its purpose was to settle new territory in the northwest and adding new states to the nation. The new territories did not allow slavery. The importance this event has to our countrys history is that without the northwest ordinance we would not have any of the north western states.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition of a bunch of the western part of the union. We purchased the land for 15 million dollars from the french. We acquired 828,000 square miles of land in total. It's important to US history because without the purchase of this land we would not have most of the mid-western states.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise happened in 1920 and admitted Maine and Missouri as states into the union. And to preserve the power balance Maine was admitted as a slave state while Missouri was admitted as a slave state. This was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Missouri Compromise marked the beginning of prolonged sectional conflicts.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine passed in December of 1823. The Monroe Doctrine warned European nations not to meddle in our affairs. It also warns that the US would not tolerate further European colonization. The Monroe Doctrine separated the influence that the United States and the Europeans would have.
  • Nullification Crisis

    The Nullification Crisis was a conflict between the United States and the state of South Carolina. Calhoun opposed the federal imposition of the tariffs. This was the first time tensions between the states and the government almost cause a civil war.
  • Texas Annexation

    The Texas Annexation was when Texas was admitted into the Union. This was also when Texas declared independence from Mexico. This was important to US history because we wouldn't have texas as a state.
  • Oregon Treaty

    The Oregon Treaty put a border between us and British North America. Vancouver island remained British. The importance of this to us history is that this Oregon our 49th state.
  • Mexican Cession

    The Mexican Cession was when they surrendered land to the United States. The terms of this transfer were explained in the Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1948. We gained the land for 15 million. The significance of this was that we gained 6 extra states.
  • Compromise Of 1850

    The Compromise Of 1850 introduced the principle of popular sovereignty. California was admitted as a free state. Slavery question in other Mexican Cession states would be decided by popular sovereignty. The sale of slaves was prohibited in DC.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by the United States in 1854. The people of Nebraska and Kansas were allowed popular sovereignty. Both sides sent supporters to sway the votes. The importance of this act to us history was that increased sectionalism and raised tensions.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent confrontations in the Kansas area. The confrontations were over the debate of slavery. It was mainly over whether Kansas should be a free state or a slave state. The importance of this moment in us history was this rose tensions really high leading to a split in ideologies across the nation.
  • Battle Of Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was a 33-hour bombardment launched by the confederacy. the confederacy at the time was known as the South Carolina militia. The confederates won as the United States army surrendered. The importance of this event was that this was the first battle that started the civil war.
  • Battle Of Bull Run

    The Battle of Bull Run was one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war. The Union lost 2,896 soldiers while the confederates lost 1,897. This was the bloodiest war in American history. This was the confederates biggest victory.
  • Battle Of Antietam

    The Battle Of Antietam was a victory for the Union. The Battle Of Antietam was also considered one of the most bloody battles in the civil war. The battle ended with 23,000 casualties. The Battle of Antietam changed the course of the civil war.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation was an order by the United States president to free all slaves in the 10 slave states. Lincoln made the proclamation a military measure. Lincoln added slave liberation so the British who were opposed to slavery to continue support for the southerner war effort. The Emancipation Proclamation was important to United States history because it freed the slaves.
  • Battle Of Vicksburg

    During the Battle of Vicksburg General Ulysses S. Grant laid siege to Vicksburg. The Union believed the capture of Vicksburg would be key to ending the war. The capture of Vicksburg split the confederacy in two. The importance of this event was that it was a key turning point in the war.
  • Battle Of Gettysburg

    During the Battle of Gettysburg General Robert E. Lee marched towards Gettysburg. He was planning on gaining Pennsylvania land to turn the war around. He ended up retreating to Virginia with nearly one-third of his men dead or wounded. The importance of this event to US history is this was the last attempt for the south to invade the north.
  • Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg Address was when Lincoln made the famous quote of "Four score and seven years ago". Lincoln visited the graves of fallen soldiers and gave his most famous speech. He considered the war as a struggle to preserve the United States. The importance of this event was that Lincoln gave his most famous speech.
  • Sherman's March To Sea

    Sherman's March To Sea was a total war strategy. He marched his troops to the sea using scorch the earth tactics. His main objective was to capture the port at Savannah Georgia. The importance of this to US history was that he struck fear into the residents of Georgia.
  • Presidential Reconstruction

    During Presidential Reconstruction President Johnson distributed all confiscated land to freed black slaves. President Johnson implemented a plan that gave the white south a hand in transitioning from slavery to freedom. Presidential Reconstruction helped freed black slaves. This moment in american history is important because this plan was a major success.
  • 13th Amendment Passed

    The 13th amendment freed the slaves and allowed them their freedom. The 13th amendment also made slavery a crime. It also granted Congress the power to enforce this article. This moment was important because it freed all the slaves.
  • 14th Amendment Passed

    When the 14th amendment was passed it granted all people born and naturalized in the United States citizenship. It also gave everyone equal protection under the law. Congress was also allowed to enforce the amendment. The importance of this event was that it gave all former slaves citizenship.
  • Congressional Reconstruction

    The goal of Congressional Reconstruction was to punish the south. It split the former confederacy into 5 military districts. It forced them to ratify the 14th amendment and forced them to allow blacks to vote. This was important to American history because the south was punished.
  • 15th Amendment Passed

    The 15th amendment was passed and it granted more people the right to vote. It did not allow people of different races to get denied the right to vote. The 15th amendment was passed in February of 1869. The importance of this event was that blacks gained the right to vote.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson was a supreme court case over segregation. Plessy was arguing the separate car act violated the thirteenth amendment. The Supreme court ruled in favor of Ferguson. This event was important to American history because the quote separate but equal was made.
