The Gunpowder Plot
On November 5, 1605, Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes, and some other men plotted to explode the Houses of Parliament along with the King inside. The men put 2 tons of gunpowder in the cellars underneath the building. On the morning the plot was supposed be carried out, Guy Fawkes was caught under the building ready to light the gunpowder. The plot was foiled and Guy Fawkes and all his friends were caught and executed. -
Guy Fawkes’ Death
For his actions in the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes was arrested to await his execution. January 30 in 1606 is when the execution of his fellow plotters started, they were hung, drawn, and quartered. The next day, Guy Fawkes’ execution was scheduled. Once he was lead to the hanging platform, he started climbing the ladder and jumped off it, breaking his neck and instantly killing him. -
James I Dies
James the first of England is the King at the time. He was in the Parliament building as king when Guy Fawkes and the other plotters tried to blow up parliament with him in it. He died March 27, 1625 at age 58. -
The Signing of The Petition Of Rights
Charles I, the King of England at he time, needed some money from Parliament and was asking them if he could have some. They made a proposal that they would give him money only if he signed the Petition of Rights. The Petition of Rights says that the king cannot jail people without good reason, he couldn’t make taxes without Parliament’s approval, he can’t force citizens to house soldiers, and has to maintain peace time for the military. -
The End of the English Civil War
In 1642, the English Civil War started, It was a fight for power, money, and right religion between the Roundheads or Parliament, and the Royalists or the King’s supporters. September 3, 1651, the Roundheads officially won the war, and ending it. -
The English Bill of Rights was Passed
After the Glorious Revolution, when Mary and William became king and queen after chasing out King James’s II they made an agreement with Parliament. Parliament was still seeking out power over the king. So they made an agreement called the English Bill of Rights, limiting Monarchy and giving parliament more power. -
Queen Victoria is Crowned
On July 28, 1838 Queen Victoria was crowned the queen of England. She was 18 at the time and had the Victorian Era named after her. She reigned for around 63 years. -
The Treaty of Nanjing was Signed
A war between China and Britain had broken out over opium. The Chinese were less technology advanced than the British and no choice but to surrender. The Treaty of Nanjing was signed by the Chinese to end the war. -
The Treaty of Kanagawa was Signed
Japan was an isolated country and was not willing to trade with the west. Matthew Perry was a commodore from America who negotiated with Japan to to sign the Treaty of Kanazawa and open their trade. Japan embraced imperialism after this. -
New Zealand gained Independence
James Cook claimed New Zealand for Great Britain in 1769 and 1770. New Zealand later became a dominion of Great Britain and had their own government. In 1856, they gained their own independence. -
The First Telephone
Around the 19-20th century many new inventions were being created. Others had come up with the telegraph another form of long distance communication but none as good as the telephone. In 1876, the telegraph was created by Alexander Graham Bell. -
The First Lightbulb was Created
As inventions continued to be made there was progress being made on how to us electricity to make light. There had many attempts before the successful version of the lightbulb. In 1878, Thomas Edison created the successful lightbulb. -
The Treaty of Shimonoseki was Signed
During the imperialism era Japan had embraced this new way of life. Japan and China had started a war fighting over Korea. The Japanese win and the Chinese surrender and sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki. -
The First Plane
Flying devices had been attempted to make several times around the early 1900s. The Wright Brothers had been experimenting with several types of aircrafts when one finally worked. The first plan was built and soon tested in Kitty Hawk and lasted only around 49 seconds. -
The Treaty of Portsmouth was Signed
Once Japan had defeated China they had been considered a threat to Russia. In 1904 the Russo-Japanese War broke out between Russia and Japan. Japan destroyed Russia completely and the war was ended with Russia surrendering and signing the Treaty of Portsmouth. -
The Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
The archduke of Austria and his wife were visiting the the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo. They’re really on their way out of town when a bomb hit their car and injured some men. He went to visit those men and his car stopped, and just at the moment Gavrilo Princip shot the archduke and his wife Sophie and they died. This is the catalyst event to World War I. -
The Gallipoli Campaign started
In modern day Turkey, there was an attempt from the British and French to take over the Ottoman Empire. This campaign took almost a year of fighting. There where many casualties ad it was not a success. -
The Armenian Genocide starts
The nation of Armenia was taken over by the Ottoman Empire and they were now under rule. Despite their lack of freedom, the Armenian still prospered which bothered the ottomans. For fear of the Armenian growing stronger the ottoman started mass murdering many of the nation eventually killing almost 1.5 million. -
Edith Cavell is Executed
Edith Cavell was a British nurse who is known for her compassion. She would help any soldier no matter what side and was credited with helping around 200 people. This act was considered treason and she was executed for it. -
The Representation of the People Act was passed
During the Victorian Era rules were quite strict. Women had been fighting for equal rights and had not yet had a breakthrough. Then, in 1918, Parliament passed the Representation of the People Act which allowed women over the age of 30 and all men to vote. -
Armistice Day
World War I was a war of attrition and both sides were running out of resources. The Central Powers were in no position to negotiate so the terms of the armistice. It was signed by both sides in an effort to make peace. -
The Treaty of Versailles is signed
At the end of the war, a treaty was formed with certain terms that Germany had to agree to. Some of these turns were the War Guilt Cause, losing territory and thousands of men in the army, de-militarization and more. Once the treaty was signed the official ending of World War I had happened. -
The Reform Act was passed
There was years of more fighting for all adult women to be able to vote but there was no change. After some more protests and rally’s change started to happen. In 1928, on July 2, the Reform Act was passed allowing women over age 21 to finally vote.
