Sun Yixian, the leader of the Kuomintang, wanted China to become a democracy. He led all the nationalists in overthrowing the last Qing emperor, Puyi. They then had an election and Sun Yixian became the first president of the Republic of China. -
World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia
The archduke of Austria-Hungary decided to go down to Sarajevo, Bosnia to make sure nationalism didn't spread to his country. While he was there, he was shot by the Black Hand. Austria-Hungary was very mad at Serbia for killing their archduke. That is why the declared war on Serbia. -
U.S. Enters the war
The U.S. entered the war for two reasons:
First, they found a telegram saying that Mexico was going to conquer more land from the U.S.
Second, they were mad about the Lusitania. -
Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
The Armistice was an agreement signed at the end of World War I. The Allies and the Central Powers agreed to stop fighting. They punished Germany in the Armistice. They signed this agreement on a train. -
Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience
Gandhi wanted to protest peacefully. He told all of his followers to just stand there and let the security guards hurt them without hurting the guards. He didn't want any other country around the world to support the British. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic
After World War I, Turkey was under the Ottoman Empire. The Greeks then invaded Turkey and threatened to conquer it. Mustafa Kemal emerged as a leader for the nationalists. He fought off the Greeks and he overthrew the last Ottoman sultan. He tried to separate church and state and modernize Turkey. -
Mao Zedong heads Long March
Nationalists and Communists disagreed on how China should be ruled. Many nationalists went into Shanghai and killed most of the Communists. The Communists, led by Mao Zedong, were chased out of China. Their long journey out of China was called the Long March.
