  • Period: 1265 to 1321

    Dante

    Dante was a famous author and Philosopher. He was from Italy and his most famous work is the "Divine Comedy"
  • Period: 1346 to 1353

    The Black Death

    The black death infested Europe in the mid 1300's. It was passed along by the fleas on rats and spread with the trade route. 75-200 million people died and it took 200 years to repopulate Europe. Most of the plague was gone by 1353, but it would show up from time to time until the 19th century.
  • 1450

    Printing Press is Invented

    The printing press was a huge deal in the renaissance. It was invented by Johannes Gutenberg. The first book printed in the press was the German version of the Bible. This made it so people could read the Bible themselves, so many different ideas about the Bible started forming.

    Machiavelli

    Machiavelli was a philosopher and political writer. One of his most famous works is "The Prince". He talks a lot about it not being the prince's responsibility to be liked or loved, but just to do what is right for the people.
  • Period: 1509 to 1564

    John Calvin: Calvinism

    John Calvin converted to Protestantism at the age of 25. He thought that the Catholic church had changed a lot from it's original version. John believed in predestination. He thought that God had already decided if we go to Heaven or to Hell, and we have free will to choose good or evil. Good works just show if you were one of the elect. He set up a government on Geneva based on his beliefs.

    Martin Luther Reforms the Church

    Martin Luther was a Catholic monk and he was very dedicated to the church, he never felt like he was really forgiven. He started to see issues with the Catholic church and he posted his 95 thesis on the wall of a church. He was excommunicated from the Catholic church and many people started to follow his new religion "Lutheranism".

    Anabaptist

    Anabaptist were another religion that started during the renaissance. They believed in adult baptisms, and that all believers were equal. The lived in their own communities and had no hierarchy. Today, they are the Amish and the Mennonites.

    Act of Supremacy

    Pretty much, King Henry VIII wanted a male heir and his wife had a girl. He wanted to divorce her but the Pope wouldn't let him, so he started his own religion, where he could get divorced. He made the Act of supremacy where it said that he was the official head of the church of England.
  • Period: 1545 to 1563

    Counter- Reformation

    Pope Paul III realized that with all these new churches forming, the Protestantism needed to be countered. They had the council of Trent where they would look at doctrine and practices and the try and clarify them. They tried to really emphasize the church in the youth so that they would never convert. Instead of unifying the Christians, the council just highlighted the differences of the religions.

    Shakespeare

    Shakespeare is a very well known English playwright. He wrote Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, The Tempest, and many many more. His plays are still performed to this day.
