Susan B. Anthony
Many women joined the work force sue to poverty. Dangerous conditions, low wages, and long hours led many female industrial workers to push for reforms. In 1848 women split over the 14th and 15th amendments, which granted equal rights including the right to vote to african american men, excluding women. Susan B. Anthony a leading proponent of of woman suffarage,said "I Would sooner cut my right hand than ask the ballot for the black man and not for women." -
Carry Nation and the WCTU
Many Women were inspired by the settlement houses to take action. Florence Kelley became an advocate for improving the lives of women and children. The WCTU spearheaded the crusade for prohibitition of alcoholic beverages. Members advanced their causes by entering saloons, singing, praying, and urging saloon keepers to stop selling alcohol. Organizations like this gave women more rights and more voice for women's suffrage -
NAWSA Formed
In the year if 1890, the NWSA of Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton united with another group to form NAWSA, the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Other leaders were Julia Howe, and Lucy Stone. -
