Dresses in 1851 were commonly made so that below the waist, the dress flowed out into what we call a cupcake form. Ruffles of fabric is what's creating this dramatic affect on the dress. Later on, a steel cage was introduced so that a dress could flow out like a cupcake and be lightweight.

Dresses in 1853 were frequenty decorated with heavy ruffles like shown in the picture. Dresses in 1853 were made so that the neck is bare, making the dress start below the shoulder. These gowns were embroided with a pretty stitching which allowed the fabric to create ruffles with small openings on the chest, although another coloured fabric was underneath.

Dresses in 1855 were decorated with wide sleeves and boxed designs, creating a plaid effect. These dresses come with a crinoline, also known as a metal cage that is shaped like a cupcake tier. The crinoline would help make the dress lightweight because this style would only be accomplished with heavy layers of fabric leading up to a grand dress.

Dresses in 1859 were usually styled with very fancy lace on the hem of the dress. These dresses came with a cape that is worn tightly around the chest and waist as a corset but past the shoulders, the dress flowed out onto the arms very loosley. These fancy dresses were commonly worn by wives of the militants. This style of dress remained extremely popular through the late 1850's and early 1860's.
