He was given the task of developing springs to hold sensitive instraments on ships. he noticed that the springs "walked on the floor" when he knocked over a box of springs. His wife noticed that the neighborhood children enjoyed this invention. He decided to name this new invention the Slinky after the Swedish word Meaning sleek and graceful. -
