Whereas previous Black liberation movements put straight cisgender Black men at the center of the narrative, these women understood the importance of putting women, queer, and transgender peoples at the forefront of the movement and organization.

    Alabama Ban on Abortions
    On this day, Alabama created a new abortion law which effectively outlawed abortions, and would make no exemptions even for victims of rape or incest. This signing sparked protests and aroused liberal voters who were previously complacent.

    During the COVID pandemic, female suicides rose dramatically, by 15%, while male suicide rates remained basically static. Many women without secure economic situations or loving partners and friends struggle with the loneliness.

    Domestic Violence Cases Surge

    After the COVID-19 stay at home order placed in March 2020 in the United States and Canada, domestic violence rates surged, along with times of crisis for women. In particular, Montreal reported an increase in domestic-related calls to the police.

    Sarah Everard's Disappearance
    On the evening of March 3, 2021, Sarah Everard, a 33-year old Londoner was walking home. Somewhere along the way she was abducted. A police officer was charged with her kidnapping and murder. This shocking and atrocious crime led many women to question their own safety and sparked debates about how it could be changed. Subsequently, many protests were held and an outpouring of support.

    Utah Law Passed
    In 2021, a law in Utah was signed requiring that any confirmed father is obligated to pay half of the mother's insurance premiums while she is pregnant, as well as any related medical costs. This was an unprecedented law that could change the narrative for many women with pregnancies.

    Overturning of Rape Case
    On the 31st of March, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned a rape case, saying it was not valid because the victim was 'voluntarily intoxicated.' The unidentified woman had had a couple of drinks and some prescription narcotics, before being misled to hang out with a couple of men. She woke up to one of them sexually assaulting her. The ruling has been met with outrage.
