    The first woman in space, Valentina Tereschkova, flew aboard the Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963. Over the course of the 70.8 hour flight she made 48 orbits of Earth. She was selected from more than 400 applicants.

    Svetlana Savitskaya
    On 19 August 1982 Svetlana Savitskaya became the second woman in space. She flew aboard the Soyuz T-7 spacecraft that docked with the Salyut 7 space station. On her second spaceflight, on 25 July 1984, she became the first woman to conduct an EVA(Extravehicular Activity).
