Torak’s father was bleeding badly since there was a huge bear that “all of the forest was afraid of”, and it attacked him. This is important because later in the book Torak is all alone, with no one to look after him.

Torak has to go to Mountain of World Spirit

Torak’s father had made Torak swear that he would find the “Mountain of World Spirit”, or die trying. That mountain is what controls the weather, and send out prey. Torak’s father thought that it could help protect Torak.

Torak's father goes on "Death Journey

Torak’s father had to go on the “Death Journey”. I think this is a very happy place you go when you are very weak. This is important because it is harder for Torak to survive without his father.

Torak meets hunters

Just after torak shot the buck, three other hunters saw Torak and grabbed him. Then they asked him why he "stole" their buck. apperantly at the clan meet, they decided that different parts of the forest were owned, and you weren't allowed to hunt in someone else's part of the forest. The hunters said that they owned that part of the forest.

The decision

Torak told the Raven clan leader that it was the law to fight for an animal, so they agreed to fight. they chose Hord, one of their strongest people.

Torak kills a buck.

When Torak was hunting, he saw a buck an shot it with an arrow. This was the first big animal that he killed.

Hunters take Torak to the rest of their clan

The three hunters decided to take Torak to the rest of their clan. since the hunters are from the Raven clan, and Torak is from the wolf clan, the clans are far apart.

The fight

There was one rule in the fight, and it was that they weren't allowed to use fire.they each got a spear and a knife. Torak lunged at Hord, but he missed and lost his spear. Then Hord did the samething, so niether of them had a spear. There was a "cooking skin" boiling on a nearby fire, and torak grabbed it and threw it on Hord. it was really hot so Hord fell over.

The "Listener"

Fin-Kedinn (the raven clan leader) told Torak he was free and could have the buck. But then someone said that he might be the "Listener" and they shouldn't let him go yet. They said that the Prophecy says "the listener fights with air and speaks in silence." Torak used steam to defeat his opponent, and he has a whistle that doesn't make noise, but if you blow it, it scares the wolf cub.
