William was promised the English throne by childless king Edward the Confesor. But in 1066 when he died his brother-in-law, Harold, claimed the throne, and William accpeted betrayal with a plan in mind. -

William assembled a fleet and an army on the southern French coast but due to winds the attack was delayed. Meanwhile Harold (who was planning for the attack) had to quickly moved North to defend from the Norwegians. -
