Attending School
Golding began attending Brasenose College at Oxford in 1930 and spent two years studying science. In his third year, however, he switched to the literature program, following his true interests. -
First Work
In 1934, a year before he graduated, William published his first work. It was a book of poetry aptly entitled Poems. -
Graduation
In 1935, he graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. -
Started Teaching
He started teaching English and philosophy in Salisburg. -
Married
The couple married in 1939. They had two children together, David (b. 1940) and Judith (b. 1945). -
Royal Naval
He temporarily left teaching in 1940 to join the Royal Navy. -
Back to Teaching & Writing
In 1945, after World War II had ended, Golding went back to teaching and writing. -
First Novel Published
In 1954 he published his first novel. It was titled Lord of the Flies. -
Teaching Retirement
Golding retired from teaching. -
Film Adaptation
Peter Brook made a film adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel. -
Nobel Prize for Literature
In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. -
Knighted
In 1988, he was knighted by England’s Queen Elizabeth II. -
New Film Adaptation
In 1990 a new film version of the Lord of the Flies was released, bringing the book to the attention of a new generation of readers. -
Death
On June 19, 1993, he died in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, England.
