Early Life
Golding was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was raised by his mother and father, Mildred and Alex. At the early age of schooling, he was taught by his father at Marlborough Grammar School. -
Education
He studied at Brasenose College in Oxford. During two years of his schooling, he studied science. However, the third year, he switched to a literature program. Furthermore, he would gradutate with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts in English and a diploma in education. -
First Work
A year before graduating college, Golding published his first work, Poems, a book of poetry, which had been published as a part of the Macmillian's Contemporary Poet Series. At the time, he was greatly into writing poetry, however, he later felt this work was just child play -
Teaching Life
He took a position as a English teacher in Bishops Wordsworth in Salisbury. Where he taught young boys, where they came as inspiration for his book, Lord of the Flies. -
Service as A Royal Navy Soilder
In 1940, Golding quit his profession as a teacher to pursue the job of a solider in the Royal Navy. During his service he spent most of his time on a boat, and he fell in love with the sea. During World War 2, he spent time battling ships and fending off submarines and pilots. -
Lord of the Flies Publication
After 21 rejections, Golding finally published his first book, Lord of the Flies, which tells the story of stranded boys on a island, and the savageness of human behavior among them. -
A Film: Lord of the Flies
Well, Peter Brook made a film adapation of his first novel, Lord of the flies. The creation of his film was just before Golding's retirement. And this event allows his book to come to life. -
Recipient of a Nobel Prize.
Finally, William Golding had received a Nobel Prize in Literature. And at that time, he was at the age of 73.
