With his parents wanting to him to be a scientist, William had his own idea. He went into literature and published "Poems" a collection of poems.

William taught here for 5 years. His experiences with the children became inspiration for "Lord of the Flies." He left teaching to serve in the Royal Navy.

He spent 6 years on a boat where he grew a love of the sea. In the Royal Navy he fought off battleships and launched rockets.

At the end of world War II William went back to his career as a writer and as a teacher.
