College
William began College at Brasenose College at Oxford. In agreement of his fathers beliefs he studies science for 2 years. On year three he decided to make a change to literature and follow his true passion. -
First Work Published
A year before he graduated, Williams first piece of work was published. It was a book of poems, appropriately names "Poems." This book was largely overlooked by critics. -
Graduated
Golding graduated from Oxford in 1935. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. -
Begins Teaching
He decided to follow in his fathers footsteps and start teaching. He began teaching English and philosophy in Salisbury at Bishop Wordsworth's School. Teaching this unruly boys serves as inspiration for his novel "Lord of The Flies." -
Left Teaching Temporarily
William left teaching and joined the Royal Navy. He joined so he could serve during World War 2. This was just a temporary thing unti the war ended, and then he would go back to teaching. -
Went Back to Teaching
After WW2 Golding went back to Bishop Wordworths School to start teaching again. He picked right back off were he ended 5 years prior. He continued to teach until 1961 -
Lord of The Flies comes out
After being rejected 21 times, Golding finally gets one of his greatest novels, Lord of the Flies, released. He used his time teaching with young school boys helped to push his novel and make it what it was. His book is over 50 years old and is still being read by people everywhere -
Next Book
His next book, The Inheritors, came out in 1955. This is only one year apart from his first novel, "Lord of the Flies." He continues on to publish 15 more books in a time span of 40 years. -
Booker Prize
His book Rights of Passage won the Booker Prize. This award is a very prestigious award for British authors. -
Nobel Prize
William was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. This was believed to be his greatest honor ever. -
Death
William Golding died at the age of 81. His cause of death was congestive heart failure.
