Missouri Compromise
This allowed Missouri to be a slave state, but to keep the balance in congress, Maine had to become a slave state. It also set the line of 36 30 degrees N latitude. The states north of this line wouls be free, and the ones south of the line would be slave. -
Wilmont Proviso
This said that slavery should be banned in any land that mexico might take over. This act did not pass. -
Fugitive Slave Law
This law required all citizens ot halp catch runaway slaves. Some people even tried to capture free blacks. -
The Book Uncle Toms Cabbin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this book to reveal how bad slavery really was to people.It got the north to see, and they joined the fight to end slavery. -
Bleeding Kansas
It was left to the state of Kansas to decide wether or not they would be a free state. People moved to and from Kansas to influense the voting, and eventualy a little war broke out. The state became free. -
Dread Scott decition
A slave Dread Scott sued his owner for keeping him as a slave outside of slave territory. He lost because slaves were not considered citizens, and people who were not citizens can't sue. He was eventualy freed. -
Lincolin-Douglass Dabates
Both men battled in a series of debates in Illinois for a spot in the senate. The main topic was slavery. Lincolin said it was up to congress to decide if the states should be free or slave, but Douglass said it was up to the states. -
Jhon Brown Raid
John Brown lead a group of 21 men (5 blacks) and they attacked skave owners in Harper's Ferry in hope the slaves would rise up. He was later taken prisioner, tried, and hung. -
Lincolin Ellected/Election of 1860
Lincolin was ellected even though his name wasn't even on the ballot in some southern states. This drove the south towards secession. -
Secession of South Caroilina
South Carolina voted to secede, and started a chain reaction.
