A compromise of Missouri being a slave and Maine was created as a free state. These two states were created to keep a balance of power between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. This was the clear line between the north and the south. -

Nat Turner’s Rebellion
A slave rebellion that took place in Virginia, led by Nate Turner. The slaves had killed 55 to 65 people. This caused fugitive laws to be more strict, sadly it was opposite of what Nat Turner wanted and his action directed this. -

The nullification was a conflict between South Carolina and President Jackson. South Carolina threatened to leave America because of tariff tax but this idea was countered by Jackson authority. This revealed the rebellious nature of the south and their hate towards change. -

California joined America as a free state. Fugitive slave laws got tougher meaning northerns had to help find slaves. Popular sovereignty for Utah and New Mexico territories. The compromise made harder for slave to leave thier owners and northern were upset by this. Free states had more power in the government, making the south angry. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin
A book written by Harriet Beecher stowie, an abolitionist about horror of slavery. This book spread awareness of slavery to many people. Abolitionist was on the rise and slave owner were critical about the book. This further added fill to the moral idea of slavery. -
Frederick Douglass gives July 4th Speech
Frederick Douglass gave a speech about slavery and wanted to convice people how wrong it is. His speech spark many people to realize how wrong slavery was. Abolitionists began to rise and started to take action. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Kansas and Nebraska were made territories after the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. This event will lead to one of the most bloodest states fight between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. Further adding more fuel to the civil war that is coming. -

Attack on Charles Sumner
In the United States Senators Chamber, Preston Brooks, a pro slavery, beat Charles sumner with a crane. Charles was anti-slavery. Many representatives started to bring guns to government houses. This created great tension between anti-slavery and poor-slavery in the government. -
Dred Scott v Sanford
Dred Scott was a enslaved person who moved to live in a free state. He sued for his freedom which reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decision was that African American were not citizens therefor Drett Scott couldn’t sue. Many abolitionists were shocked by the outrageous decision. This means states don’t have the power to forbid slavery completely. -

Raid on Harpers Ferry
A group of abolitionists led by John Brown to assault the federal Armory that was located in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. This started to greatly intensify the hate between pro-slavery and anti-slavery. Many people believe his act was similar to a hero’s act. -
Election of 1860
The election of Abraham Lincoln, who was part of the republicans party. Northern states were much bigger and had more electoral votes. Many southern states were angry by this decision because their votes did not matter. -
Shots fired at Ft. Sumter
This was the official start of fighting in the American Civil War. Union troops (northern troops) stationed at Ft. Sumter in South Carolina were attacked by the South Carolina militia. Union troops lost and surrendered the fort to the Confederate militia. Unlike previous acts of violence, this was the first time violence broke out between organized military troops. Fighting in the Civil War would continue for 4 more years after this event. -
