    Original 13 Colonies
    The U.S gained control of this land during the Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence is a statement of the second Continental Congress that defined the colonists rights, outlined their complaints against Great Britain, and declared the colonies' independence. The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was for the colonies todelcare independence from Great Britain.The American Revolution lasted for five years.This war caused the newly formed U.S economy to be in debt.
  • Northwest Territory

    Northwest Territory
    The U.S obtained the Northwest Territory during te Revoltionary War. Five states were created out of this territory. Ohio, Indiana, Illinoise, Michigan and Wisconsin. When the population of a territory reached 60,000, it's settlers could draft their own constitution, The people could then ask congress for permission to join the Union as a state. A bill of rights, public education, and no slavery were required for a territory to become a state,
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    President Jefferson wanted to keep the French from controlling New orleans, but he did not want to start a war. Napoleon as willing to sell Louisiana. The U.S agreed to buy Louisiana from France for $15 million.They signed a treaty of purchase on May 2, 1803. The Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans would help a great deal with trade for the U.S. President Jasckson is credited for purchasing thisl and for $15 million. The size of the U.S almost doubled because of the Louisiana Purchase,
  • Adams-Onis Treaty Part II

    Under the Adams-Onis Treaty, Spain gave up east Florida to the U.S and gave up its claim to West Florida. In return, the U.S gave up it's claims to what is now Texas. The U.S also agreed to taske responsibilty for up to $5 million of U.S citisen's claims against Spain.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    Southernerds were upset with the Seminole Indians because they were raiding their land. President Monroe sent troopsn under the command of General Andrew Jackson to secure the border. In April 1818 Jackson's troops invaded Florida to capture Seminole raiders, thus beginning the First Seminole War. It was unconstitutional because Jackson was not given permission by President Monroe to invade.

    They had to become Mexican ciizens,obey Mexican laws, and support the Roman Catholic Church. Four days before the Battle of Alama, Texas delegates had met to delcare independence from Mexico.Within two weeks, they had written a constitution.the defeat of the Battle of San Jacinto destroyed Santa Anna's army. Texans captured the Mexican leader and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas it's independence. A republic is a state in which supreme power is held by the people.

    Manifest Destiny is a belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800s that the United States was meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean.
  • Texas Annexation

    Texas Annexation
    The word "annex" means to take control of land and incorporate into a country, state,etc. Americans moved to Texas because Mexico hired empresarios, or agents, to bring settlers to Texas. The promise of cheap or free land attracted most of these families. Each man could recieve 640 acres, with additional land for his wife and each child. Other grants offered about 4,600 acres of free land to every married man. Mexico had set requirements for all foreign immigrants.

    The economy of Texas was based largely on farming and ranching with very liottle industry, there was very little cash.The lack of funds made it difficult for Texas to defend its vast territory.To make matters worse, Mexico still considered Texas to be its property. The U.S did not allow Texas to enter the Union because Texas supported slavery.Adding Texas to the Union would upset the balance between free and slave states. Slavery could possibly expand throughout the south.

    Spain originally owned the Oregon Territory, but gave it up when they signed the Adams-Onis Treaty. The U.S was trying to avoid war with Great Britain, which resulted in them signing a treaty. The current U.S states that were created out of the Oregon Territory was Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and part of Montana and Wyoming.
  • Mexican Cession

    Mexican Cession
    The main issue that the U.S and Mexico argued over that led to the Mexican-American War was by the act of the Republic of Mexico. The name of teh treaty that ended the Mexican-American War was called the Treaty of Guadalupe. The states that were created in the Mexican Cession was California, Nevada, most of Arizona, New Mexico,and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The Mexican Cession totaled more than 500,000 square miles, increasing the size of the U.S by almost 25 percent.
  • Gadsden Purchase

    Gadsden Purchase
    The U.S agreed to purchase this land because they were trying to avoid another war. The U.S paid $10 million for the land for the southern parts of what is now Arizona and new Mexico. The continental bound of the United Sates was finally fized. the belief of "Manifest Destiny" is finally complete because we now have the land from Maine all the way to California.
