Louisiana Purchase
This land originally belonged to Spain. Spain sailed to France, and France didn't let the U.S. have New Orleans even though the United States needed New Orleans to gain access from the MS River, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. Jefferson sent Monroe and Livingston to negotiate wth Napoleon Bonaparte because France needed money from war with England, and lost Haiti. It would be difficult to protect LA territory. The U.S. then paid $15 million for the land which doubled our country size. -

Mexican War
Texas fought a war to become indpendent from Mexico. The Mexican Army attacked and defeated Texan soldiers at the Alamo. Soon after Texans lost the Alamo, Texan troops under Sam Houston defeated the Mexican Forces. -
Texas Indpendence
After the Mexican War of indpendence, Texas become an official state. This day celebrates the day that Mexico came indpendence! -
Oregon Territory part of US
The slogan for James Polk's election of 1844 was '54 40N.' By 1846, many Americans overcrowded the area. Instead of starting war, Britain instead made an agreement. It is called the 49 parallel, this gave us WA, OR, MT, WY, and ID. -
California becomes a State
California had a slavery issue. This allowed California to enter the Union. California entered the Union as a free, non-slave state, by the compromise of 1850. It became an official state on September 9, 1850. -
Gadsen Purchase
The United States paid $10 million for the Gadsen Purchase. The Gadsen Purchase is a strip of land along the the southern edge of present day New Mexico and Arizona.
