This created more towns around the United States. It was also a cause for a lack of natural resources due to trees needing to be chopped down for space. -
Indian Removal
Gave almost all of the land that the Indians owned to the US government. This caused great conflict between the US and the Native Americans. -
Manifest Destiny
The belief that people in the US will get to have all of the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was some sort of religious movement to get people to go west. This drove the US crazy for land. -
Nativism
Having an affinity for the ideas and goals of natives of the US rather than immigrants. This led to people not wanting too many immigrants as they'd ruin the "American Way." -
Third Parties Politics
It is a political party that isn't Republicans or Democrats. Two examples of these groups would be Libertarians and Greens. -
Homestead Act
People were given a free 160 acres of land. They had to improve the living grounds there in 5 years time. This promoted people moving across the US to get that land for a very cheap price. -
The Gilded Age
This era starts after the Civil War and continues past the Reconstruction era. This era signaled a rapid growth in economy. Typically American workers were paid higher than European ones. -
Industrialization
This is the mass development of industries in any given country. Usually the economy begins to boom as soon as this begins. The value of money and amount of it typically grows. -
Populism and Progressivism
The general mass of people is populism. Where as the rich typically went for progressivism. One supports more of the upper-class, while the other defends the lower-classes. -
Civil Service Reform
Positions in the government are given based on merit instead of affiliation. More jobs were needed for how large the US was getting, so more positions opened up with this. -
Andrew Carnegie
He led the American steel industry in the 19th century. He is considered one of the richest people to ever live. -
Ida B. Wells
An early leader of Civil Rights movements. Also known as a feminist, journalist, socialist, and a newspaper editor. She led an anit-lynching crusade in the 1890s -
Haymarket Riot
There was a bombing that occurred during a labor demonstration. Plenty of people were killed during this attack. -
Dawes Act
Allowed for the president to survey the reservations natives lived on to check for valuable resources. If the land had some, they were asked to move, or forced out. This wasn't a successful act. -
Jane Adams
She was a pioneer for American settlement and social workers. She is also considered a leader of women's suffrage. Founded one of the first settlements in the United States -
Susan B. Anthony
American social reformer. She was also a women's rights activist. Soon became a leading figure in abolition. -
Eugene V. Debbs
He was one of the leaders of the Industrial Workers. He was the socialist candidate for the President of the United States five given times. Also a leader of the American Union. -
Klondike Gold Rush
This was a mass immigration over to Alaska. The reason for this was the massive amounts of gold found over there. -
Political Machines
A political organization where a boss would command around the people underneath him. The boss typically received any sort of compensation that the ones beneath him got. -
Initiative and Referendum
Two of the three powers that the voters have during any given election. The last one is recall. -
William Jennings Bryan
An American orator and a politician from Nebraska. Considered a dominant force in the Democratic Party. Was a three time leader for the United States. -
Theodore Roosevelt
The 26th president of the United States. He was a soldier, explorer, naturalist, and a statesmen. Said that limited government is obsolete with the rise of industrial capitalism. -
Upton Sinclair
He was an American writer that wrote over hundreds of books. Famously created the book titled The Jungle. Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1943. -
Muckraker
A person who would typically try to instigate issues in the political aspects or business aspects of a country. -
Pure Good and Drug Act
Poisonous or misbranded food will no longer be able to be sold. Any sort of information on packaging can't be false. This led to a lot less sickness due to meats going bad, for instance. -
Dollar Diplomacy
This allowed for a certain amount of a loan given out to foreigners upon entering our country. -
16th Amendment
Congress can't put taxes on anything without the state's approval. They have the right to collect any taxes from the state's though. -
17th Amendment
The senate is made up of two senators to represent each state, in order to keep a fair vote. They also get to run for a total of 6 years before another election. People who ran before can run once again, -
Federal Reserve Act
This introduce some form of economic stability in the US by having a central bank. This bank is in charge of monetary policies. -
18th Amendment
This made it to where having alcoholic beverages produced was illegal. Though any alcohols meant for medical reasons were not included inside of this. -
19th Amendment
This made it to where most of everyone was allowed to vote in the United States. It says that no matter your sex or gender, you will be able to vote within the United States. This was another success in pushing for equality. -
Suffrage
This is the basic right to vote in a political situation. This wasn't originally given to any coloured people, or females. Eventually it was resolved and it was a large step in equality for the US. -
Clarence Darrow
Was completely for the Georgist economic reform. A leader in the civil rights movements. Fought many famous trials in the early 20th century. -
Teapot Dome Scandal
A bribery incident that took place in the US. The president authorized control of the reserves in one of the largest oil companies to a single man. -
Immigration and the American Dream
The American Dream was to have a family and kids, and have a job that would be able to let your family live comfortably. Immigrants came over to American in order to try and achieve economical success themselves. This would solely depend on which country they came from too.
