Dred Scott sued for his freedom in 1847 because his master brought him to a land where he was free. After to years it was decided that he could not sue due to the fact that he was not an American citizen. The Fugitive Slave Law
The Fugitive Slave Law declared that any slave who was caught after running would be returned to their masters and face the consequences. California was to become a state in the United States only if it would enforce The Fugitive Slave Law. -
Shadrach Minkins
In 1851 Shadrach Minkins was kidnapped in Boston, Massachussets by slave catchers. He could not be freed by Fugitive Slave law because it was not existant at the time, and was rescued by a group of African-Americans. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
The The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 was the act that started the Republican party. It created Kansas and Nebraska, and was founded to create more room for slavery. The politicians who opposed the idea of it including slavery where the ones who created the Republican party.
