The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was from 1754 to 1763 but not many things happened until 1756. It was fought by the colonies of British America and New France, with the help of France, Great Britain, and Native American allies. -
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris took place in Paris and it was signed by the representatives of the United States and the representatives of King George lll of Great Britain. The treaty was signed on April 15, 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was when the United States bought 530,000,000 acres of the Louisiana territory from France. They purchased it for fifteen million dollars on April 30, 1803. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark Expedition took place in 1805, when Merriweather Lewis and William Clark, and around 35 soldiers, skilled civilians, and Lewis' slave, set out to get from Eastern America to Western America. The journey took two and a half years and they discovered more than 200 new items. -
The Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail was a 2,200 mile long route that went from Missouri to Oregon that took place between 1811 and 1840. There were about 400,000 settlers, farmers, miners, etc. on the trail heading to Oregon. -
The War of 1812
The War of 1812 was fought by the United States, British colonial Canada, and some Native tribes. The war lasted for three years, going from 1812 to 1815 although there was no clear winner. -
The Creek War
The Creek War was a war involving the Creek, United States, and the European settlers. The war took place mainly in Alabama and along the Gulf Coast. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine stated that any European that attempts to colonize in North or South America would be considered acts of aggression. -
Indian Removal Act/Trail of Tears
The Indian removal act was a law signed by Andew Jackson that stated the president could grant unsettled land and use it in exchange of Indian land. The land he wanted had over 15,000 Native Americans living on it. Instead of leaving them alone and getting some other land, they decided to move them to land in the Eastern territory. -
The Manifest Destiny
The Manifest Destiny was a term used in the 1840's meaning they were destined to expand America. The Americans thought that they were put on Earth to help America grow as a country. -
The Donner Party
The Donner Party was when a group of people started a journey, joined by many others, to get to California for free. They told everyone, if they make it alive, they can have all of the land they want for no price. -
Mexican-American War
The Mexican-American war began on April 25, 1846 when the Mexican calvary attacked a group of American soldiers. Two years later, the Treaty of Guadalupe was signed thus ending the Mexican-American war. -
The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was from 1848-1855, when James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. When the news of gold got around, the population in Coloma grew. By 1852 there was about 250,000 people living there. -
The Gadsden Purchase
During the Gadsden Purchase, the United States purchased 45,535 square miles of land from Mexico for $10,000,000. This event took place on December 30, 1853. -
The Comstock Lode
The Comstock Lode was a lode of silver ore, located under the Eastern slope of Mount Davidson. -
The Pony Express
The Pony Express was created by three guys, William H. Russel, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors. It was a mail delivery service that would carry and bring mail on horseback on a 2,000 mile trail. -
Purchase of Alaska
On March 30, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. They paid $7.2 million for the land. Years later, some people discovered gold in Alaskan land starting the Klondike Gold Rush. -
First Transcontinental Railroad
The first transcontinental railroad was finished on May 10, 1869. It only took 83 hours and 39 minutes to get from New York City to San Francisco. In a third class car, from Omaha to San Francisco, it cost around sixty-five dollars, which was expensive back then. Riding in the trains were not cheap, but it was a lot faster than walking or riding horse-back. -
The Ghost Dance
The Ghost Dance was a religious ritual that the members of the tribes of the Great Plains did in the 1800's. They believed it would reunite the spirits with the living and bring peace to the Native Indians. -
Klondike Gold Rush
The Klondike Gold Rush began on August 16, 1869 at Bonanza Creek, when a few people found gold in the Yukon River. Around 100,000 people came to the area when they heard about the gold rush.
