Trail of Tears
After the Indian Removal Act, all indians had to move West into OK and NE. The Cherokee were forced to go on a long march to get to their new territory which was called the Trail of Tears. -
Oregon Trail
Once the news of moving West became popular, many people wanted to join in. Over 30,000 people went on the journey to Oregon, even while Britain still technically had control over the region. -
"Manifest Destiny"
John L. O'Sullivan created this phrase to describe how Euro-Americans were pre-destined by God to rule all of America. They needed to travel and conquer all of the West to make "God's will" true. -
Texas
Texas became an independant "country" after rebelling against Mexico, but after about 10 years, Texas became a part of the United States. It became a part of the Deep South and Southerners went there to gain land and grow more cotton. -
Mormons Head West
After years of prosecution for their religious beliefs, the leader of the Mormons, Bringham Young, lead the group to freedom. They moved to the new state of Utah to be free to practice their religion. -
Oregon Treaty
After the two countries of Britain and the US quarrelled over who claimed the territory of Oregon, they finally came to an agreement. They decided to split the territory in two parts, so both countries still had land. The US got the southern part and Britain kept the northern part. -

Mexican-American War
When the Americans started moving Westward, they hit Mexican territory. The two countries started a war because of the invasion of Mexico's territory. American won the war and gained territory from Mexico for only $15 million. -

Gold Rush
After America gained California(and other land) from Mexico, many people moved westward. California became a "golden state" after the discovery of gold. About a year after the discovery of gold, over 90,000 "49ers" traveled to California in search of gold. -
Pony Express
Since the US has expanded immensely and the people were in need of a method of communication. The Pony Express was created to help speed up the process of transporting news and mail across the US. -
Pacific Railroad Act
America developed from coast to coast and technology was advancing in many ways. The US government decided that a railroad was necessary in order to connect the east and the west.
