    The Cotton Gin was invented because it helped greatly from removing the seed out of the cotton. The cotton gin offered very little money to Eli Whitney because he could not get a patent on it. It also promoted more slavery because it made things easier so you could get more slaves to make twice the product as before.

    The XYZ Affair was a diplomatic affair between the French and Americans that resulted in an undeclared war. The French bribed an American delegate and caused the whole issue. So the whole issue arises because of a couple people.

    The Louisiana Purchase was a deal between the United states and France and it cost $15 million. The U.S. got about 827,000 square miles of land and that doubled the size of the United States. The territory stretched from the Mississippi River to the east of the Rocky Mountains.

    The Adams-Onis Treaty is a treaty that was between Spain and the United States over Florida. The treaty happened in 1819 and it was over Florida. Spain gave Florida to the United States because it settled a border dispute.

    The Missouri Compromise happened because Missouri wanted to become a slave state and that would have upset the balance of free and slave states. So they made Missouri a slave state and Main a free state so it would all work out in the end. It drew an imaginary line across the Louisiana Territory establishing a boundary between free and slave states.

    The Indian Removal Act was signed by Andrew Jackson on May 28,1830. This act allowed him to negotiate with Southern Indian Tribes for their removal to federal territory. The federal territory was on the other side of the Mississippi river in exchange for their ancient ancestral lands.

    The Battle of the Alamo is when a group of Texas soldiers that had volunteered was occupying the Alamo in the war for independence from Mexico. 200 people were holding out the fort and they lasted 13 day before Mexican invaders overpowered them. For Texas this became an enduring symbol of their resistance for independence, which they won later that year.

    The Texas Claims Independence is when American Texans claim independence from Mexico. They also adopted a constitution that says free slavery which had not been allowed under Mexican rule.

    The Trail of Tears is when Indians had to walk thousands of miles to get to “Indian Territory”.Indians had lived on some lands for generation and then eventually very few were left and the ones that were there were working for white men that wanted their land. They were all forced to leave and walk to the other side of the Mississippi River and it was a very difficult journey.

    Texas got annexed to the United States six months after Texas accepts annexed of the territory. In the 1820’s Mexicans welcomed foreign settlers to Texas. They eventually outnumbered the Mexican and they started a war for independence. They got and became the 28th state to the United States.

    The Mexican-American War was marked as the first U.S armed conflict on foreign soil. It divided the Mexico which was not prepared for this attack. President James K. Polk thought that the United States should expand to the Pacific Ocean. After the battle Mexico lost about ⅓ of its territory.

    The Agreement of the 49th Parallel was Britain and the United States signed a treaty as the international boundary in the Pacific Northwest. Before then certain states like Washington and Oregon were under joint occupancy which meant that British and Americans could move and trade freely.

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in favor of the United States and ended the Mexican and American War. The treaty added 525,000 square miles to the United States and gave up all claims on Texas. It was recognized that Rio Grande was America’s southern boundary.

    California became a state on September 9,1850 and it was the 31st state to the U.S. It had been part of the United States for less than two years and was never a territory. Mexico had given the state up because they didn’t really lose anything giving it up. Nine days before they gave it up there was gold found in the state though.

    The Gadsden Purchase was a treaty between Mexico and the United States and helped resolve issues after the Mexican-American War. The U.S bought 29,670 square miles of land from Mexico for $10 million so they could build railroad tracks there.

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a 1854 bill that allowed settlers to decide between slavery would be allowed in the new state borders. The conflicts that arose after the fact between people for and against slavery caused what is known as Bleeding Kansas. It eventually led into the American Civil War.
