Thomas Jefferson ordered the purchase negotiations fearing that the French who were led by Napoleon wanted to establish an empire in North America.

Spani removed troop from Florida due to revolution in the South American colonies and Andrew Jackson took that as an opportunity to seize Florida from Spain. Jackson got permission to capture slaves and punish the seminole Indians who were using Florida as a refuge, and was told to respect all settlements.Jackson captured native leaders, seized Spanish posts, St.Marks and Pensacola, deposed the Spanish governor.

    The Missouri Compromise was an effort by Congress to get rid of the sectional and political rivalries caused by the request of Missouri for admission as a slave state, the United States was evenly divided between slave and free, adding Missouri as a slave state would upset the balance of power and the North (Free states) were not supportive of this. As a result Maine was made a free state and Missouri was accepted admission of a slave state giving equal power to slave and free states.
