Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase Treaty was signed by Robert Livingston, James Monroe, and Barbé Marbois in Paris on April 30th, 1803. The Louisiana Purchase was the exchange of some southern land originally owned by the French. France sold the Louisiana area to the United States and doubled their land mass. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition begins
Thomas Jefferson sends Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on a two year journey to the Western half of the soon to be known, United States. At the time, the area Lewis and Clark end up exploring is unknown to the Americans. Lewis and Clark are the first Americans to discover the end of the Western half of the United States and they finally reach the Pacific Ocean. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition ends.
After two years of endless discoveries and exploring, Lewis and Clark finally return home in St. Louis. They survived an incredible journey, but not without the help out many other people. Including the well-known Sacagawea. -
Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act was a treaty signed into power by President Andrew Jackson. The treaty agreed that the Indians would be forced to leave their land and territory. The Act was highly controversial and not everyone agreed that it was right. The South supported it because of the crisis Georgia was facing with the Indian Cherokee tribe. -
Trail of Tears
There is no specific date for the beginning of the Trail of Tears, but it began with the Choctaw tribe in 1831. Soon after, many other Indian tribes were forced to travel the long, depressing walk to the "Indian Territory", now known as Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears followed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and made many innocent tribes leave their homes. The Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and many others fleed their homes by forve over the long period of the Trail of Tears. -
Oregon Trail
The first traveling date of the Oregon Trail is unknown, however, we know that the first migrant wagon traveled its long path during the year of 1836. The trail was put together by many fur trappers and traders during their travels throughtout the years of 1811-1840. The Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners, and businessmen and their families. The use of the trail declined when the first railroad was invented. -
Mexican-American War
The Mexican-American War began during the year 1846 and lasted through 1848. It was a battle of armed conflict taking place in the Southwestern part of the United States. The U.S. began the war by quickly capturing New Mexico and California. Battles continued for the next year and a half but the war was finally ended when the U.S. conquered Mexico City. -
Mormon Pilgrimage
The Mormon Pilgrimage was a journey from Nauvoo, Illinois to Utah traveled by 70,000 MOrmon Pioneers. This journey was taken after the unfortunate assassination of Mormon founder, Joseph Smith. The MOrmons decided that faith could not remain in Illinios around March 1846. The migration greatly increased around April 1847.
