The Expedition begins.

They packed alot of things like, dictionaries, syringes, 176 pounds of gunpowder, 45 flannel shirts, 12 pocket mirrors for gifts for the Indians, handsaws, a telescope, and much more. They left in a keelboat that was 55 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. -

Sergent Charles Floyd is the expeditions first and only casualty. He died of a burst appendix. He was the first United States soldier to die west of the Mississippi River. The hilltop where is buried is named Floyd's Bluff and the stream nearby is named Floyd's River. -

Toussaint Charbonneau and Sacagawea.

His young wife Sacagawea joins the expedition too. Sacagawea was a Shoshone Indian and was kidnapped by the Hidatsas and then sold to Charbonneau. Sacagawea was 6 months pregnant at the time. The captains believed they would be helpful when the expedition reached the mountains. -

The White Cliffs of the Missouri are amazing sandstone formations that compare to the ruins of an ancient city. -
The Great Falls of the Missouri.

The captains thought that the journey across the Great Falls would be about half a day but it actually took (nearly) a month. (They didn't know that there were four more waterfalls immediately upriver.) -
Shoshones.

The explorers need to get horses so they can cross the mountains. Sacagawea helps translate. The chief of the Shoshone tribe turns out to be her brother. The camp was named Camp Fortunate. (The Shoshones decided to trade with the explorers.) -
Lost in the Bitterroot Mountains.

Old Toby lost the trail and everyone was lost in the Bitterroot Mountains, it began to snow and they were on the brink of starvation. -

Split up.
The explorers split into two smaller groups so they can explore more of the Louisiana Territory. Clark takes a group down the Yellowstone River. Lewis takes a group across the shortcut to the Great Falls and then explores the northernmost reaches of the Marias River. They will be split at one point into 4 separate groups. -
Blackfeet warriors.

Lewis' group leaves the site to meet up with Clark. -
Reunited.
