Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 didn't allow westward expansion beyond the Appalachians. The reasons the British did this were to keep colonists in the east and also still collect taxes. The colonists were mad about this proclamation. They defied it and moved west anyway. This helped the colonists become more independent. -
Northwest Territory
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was important. This law didn't allow people to go to the land in the Great Lakes area. It was only allowed for settlement and the land came with rules for settlement. -
West & East Florida
Henry Clay came up with a plan called the “American System”. The “American System” established a protective tariff, it placed a tax on all imported goods that made european goods more expensive. Also, it improved transportation. -
Red River Basin
The United States signed the Convention of 1818 and got new land. The land that the United States recieved in the treaty: Red River Basin. Later on the Red River Basin becomes Minnesota and North Dakota. -
Oregon Territory
US and Britain shared the land with the Indians. Oregon looked good to farmers. In the spring people made their way to Oregon. Young farm families and gold seekers went to Oregon through the mountains and past the rivers. -
Mexican Cessation
Polk wanted to gain land near the Oregon territory. After the Texas Annexation: Mexico separated from the United States. Polk wanted to buy California and New Mexico from the Mexicans. The Mexicans said no. -
Webster-Ashburton Treaty
In 1842, Daniel Webster met withAlexander Baring. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty reached agreement on the following points:
- Boundaries
- Extradition
- African slave trade -
Texas Annexation
This treaty was a negotiation of the Oregon Territory. And it also ended the Mexican American War which caused the making of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase is Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. The purchase included lands south of the Gila River and west of the Rio Grande. In the end the territory was bought for ten million dollars. -
Alaska
In 1866, Russia wanted to sell the United States Alaska. America paid Russia 7.2 million for Alaska. The United States got almost 600,000 square miles. It took until 1896 for people to realize that Alaska was valuable. -
Louisiana Purchase
France sold the Louisiana Purchase to the United States. The Louisiana Purchase was west Ohio River Valley. It spanned 800,000 square miles and it would later become 13 states. -
Hawaii
Americans got Hawaii as a result of the sugar trade. In 1890 congress approved the Mckinley Tariff which raised sugar prices. This in result caused a depression throughout Hawaii. Mckinley annexed Hawaii when he was president.
