Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 forced the colonists to stay to the east of the Mississippi river, effectively bringing them into closer contact with England. The English would also be able to more effectively levy taxes on the colonists. -
The Northwest Territory
Abolished slavery from the new states that would be created there, and created rules for government and civil services based on the population. -
The Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana purchase oubled the size of the U.S. It also allowed people to begin to spread out into the midwest. They were granted access to the Mississippi river and New Orleans. -
The Red River Basin
The Red River Basin would become the states Minnesota and North Dakota. The agreement that gave the United States the Red River Basin also included a provision stating that England and the United States would have joint occupancy in the Oregon Territory. -
West and East Florida
The purchase brought forward the idea that the United States were being idealogically divided into three regions: the North, the South, and the West. The Northerners wanted to avoid placing tariffs on goods due to their heavily industrial economy, whereas the Southerners wanted tariffs because they would act in their favor; they made their money from farming. Those in the west were generally neutral when it cae to the matter of tariffs. -
Webster-Ashburton Treaty
This treaty corrected the borders of the Northeastern United States. It resolved many conflicts that surrounded it, including the solution to a rebellion in 1837. -
Texas Annexation
The annexation of Texas resulted in a large new piece of land falling under U.S. control. This annexation pushed the Mexican border to where it is today. The annexation would eventually lead to the Mexican-American War. -
The Oregon Territory
This territory resulted in a gold rush around 1850. The Oregon territory gave the U.S. access to about 500,000 square miles of land. Many fur trading posts were established in the territory during this time, helping to pave the way for larger settlements in the future. -
Mexican Cession
This territory was the result of the treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo. The United States captured these lands by winning the Mexican-American War. The states of California and New Mexico were among those included in the deal. -
Gadsden Purchase
This purchase gave the U.S. what would become the southern tips of Arizona and New Mexico. The purchase cost $10 million. This also allowed for the Transcontinental railroad to be expanded into the southwest. -
Alaska
Alaska was bought from Russia for $72 million. It would eventually draw attention with the discovery of gold in the klondike. The purchase included over 600,000 square miles of land. -
Hawaii
The annexation of Hawaii was very unpopular. The general public hated the idea, but the islands provided a way for the United States to expand their sphere of influence into the Pacific Ocean.
