Proclamation of 1763
Following the French and Indian War, French colonists were left resentful of Britain and in effort to “control” and regain order of the French the British took action. These actions included deportation of French colonists and to keep a closer eye on the French, not allow them to move west of the Appalachian mountains. Keeping the French to the east coast allowed British easier access to collect taxes. -
Northwest Territory
The land known as the Ohio River Valley was made into 5 states that excluded slavery. The land was set up as a grid system then sold to pay off debt and make money to fund education. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States bought the Louisiana territory from France for $15 million in 1803. This purchase nearly doubled the U.S. in size. -
Red River Basin
The Treaty of Ghent stated Britain and the U.S. would jointly own the Oregon Territory (lasted until 1846). The land the United States acquired was known as the Red River Basin and today is known as Minnesota and North Dakota. -
West and East Florida
Adams bought all of Florida from Spain for $5 million. This set the western boundary for the Louisiana Purchase. -
