The Fall of the Roman Empire
The Fall of the Rome (in 410 C.E.) was caused by the army of the Visigoths. The Visigoths pillaged. looted, and burned their way through the city, which was left undefended. In 476 C.E. the final Roman emperor was overthrown by the German Odoacer.

The Crusades
The Crusades were religious wars between both the Christians and the Muslims. There were a total of 8 Crusades. By the end of the 11th century, Western Europe had become powerful and the Muslims and Christians were now constantly at war. The only remaining Crusader cities fell under Muslim control. Although the Europeans were ultimately defeated some historians say that the Crusades helped pave the path for the future of Christianity.

The last monarch of France was killed via the guillotine. Thousands of French citizens were also executed. The conflict finnaly ended in 1799.

WWI
World War I began because of the assassination of the Archduke of Bosnia, Franz Ferdinand. The Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States) were locked in battle with the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire). The Allied Powers became victors on November 11, 1918. when an Armistice was signed. Overall 16 million people were killed.

The Creation of NATO
NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was established by 12 Western countries. Some of which include, the United States, Great Britain, France and others. NATO was created because the countries who stayed democratic wanted to protect each other from falling to Communism. Today there are currently 28 members apart of NATO.

The Creation of the Warsaw Pact
East Germany, the Soviet Union, and many other communist countries created the Warsaw Pact in response to NATO. This agreement created both a political and military alliance between Communist countries. The Warsaw Pact lasted until 1991 when it was dissolved.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall
During the early years of the Cold War the Berlin Wall was built by Communist East Germany to prevent people from fleeing to the democratic side. People were seeking better lives and political freedom which is why the East Germans felt the need to prevent mass emigration. Once the Cold War began to thaw across Europe the East Germans had announced a change in relation with the West, therefore allowing people to cross the border.

The Collapse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union collapsed on 12 26, 1991. After WWII the Soviet hold on Eastern Europe began to slip and their oil and natural gas revenue began to drop. The Soviet Union separated into the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The Formation of the European Union
The European Union was created on November 1, 1993. It created a political and economic alliance between most European countries. The European Union also creates law that each citizen must follow. The EU currently has 28 members.
