    Sparta and Athens were two of the greatest Poleis to come from the Archaic Age. They both were very different in their views of war, men and women, and military views.

    Persian Expansion

    Persian Expansion
    The Persian expansion came from the fall of the Assyrian Empire. The Persian Empire then grew to be a large empire stretching from India to Greece.

    Pericles

    A leader in Athens who helped to transform the idea of democracy. He created laws about public servants and also stating that children of Athenians are Athenians.
  • 490 BCE

    Persian War

    Persian War
    Greek defeated Persia in an underdog fight. The Greek cities of Ionia fought against Persia.

    The Classical Age

    The Classical Age
    The most studied period of Greece, they Classical Age consisted of great innovations in intelligence, military, and art.
  • 400 BCE

    Greek Philosophy

    Greek philosophy was evolving to create moral and ethical codes. Some of the great philosophers of this time include Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle who went on the teach Alexander the Great.
  • 359 BCE

    Philip II

    Philip II
    Philip II was the ruler of Macedonia before Alexander the Great conquered Macedonia. The Macedonians were Greeks by definition of culture and language. They lived in villages instead of Poleis which was unique for their time. Phillip II unified Macedon so it could become the country it is known for.
  • 334 BCE

    Alexander the Great

    Alexander the Great transformed Greek culture and was the greatest war general of his time. He conquered the Persian empire and created a new Greek empire.
  • 327 BCE

    The Hellenistic Era

    The time period following Alexander the Great’s conquering. This era included Greek culture expanding and evolving. It also included new trade routes and new philosophies.
