Allies won the war
Germany was in state of chaos,The allies offered Germany but under strict conditions.One condition was that Germany should become more democrative and that the Kaiser should abdicate.
When the Keiser refused a revolt was triggered -
Kaiser abdicate
The Kaiser abdicated his throne and left Germany for the Netherlands.The following day Ebert became the new leader and signed an armistce with the allies.The war was over.He also anunced that the freedom speech ,freedom of worship were alowded. -
Eberts oppositions
The reaction of politician in Germany was unenthusiastic.Ebert had oppositions ffrom both right and left. RIGHT WING:all the kasisers formed adivisers remain in their position .They restricted what the new governament could do.They hoped for a return to rule by the Kaiser. LEFT WING: There were many communists who believed that at this stage Germnay need a communist revolt just as in Russia. -
Free elections
Free elections took place for the first time in Germany´s history.
Eberts party won a mayority an he became the president of the Weimar Republic. -
Treaty of Versailles
The terms of the trety were announced.The right wing was very angry.Ebert goverment was blamed for betrayng Germany. They lost many things.Germans felt that they were stabbed from the back by socialist and liberal politicians -
The Republic in danger
From the start Ebert faced violent oppositions from both sides. Left: One left-wing group was know as the spartacssit .They were communists led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg.
.Not all soldiers were on the side of the spartacist ,some anti-communist ex soldiers have formed themselves into vigilant groups called Freikorps.Spartacist and Freikorps had many fights and Freikorps won. Right: were people who grown up in the succesful days,they nearly doomed Ebert´s goverment. -
The Ruhr
French and Belgians troops entered the Ruhr (quite legaly under the treaty of Versailles) and began to take what was owed to them in the form of raw materials and goods.
This was disastrous for Germany,the goverment order the workers to go into strike -
Hyperinflation
The govermnet printed money,for the goverment this seemed an attractive solution.This set off a chain reaction,the money of the people was worthless,poor people suffered,a prosperous midle-class family would not even buy a loaf of bread -
Gustav Stresemann
Stresemann took over the goverment,he called off the passive resistance in the Ruhr,he called in the worthless marks and burn them,he negociated to recieve american loans under the Dawes plan.
The economic crisis was solved -
