  • Jim Crow laws

    Laws restricting African Americans freedom were first known as black codes, southerners then started passing Jim Crow laws in 1877. By the 1920s African Americans were restricted from public transportation, voting, and were expected to pay poll taxes. Jim Crow laws segregated African Americans from whites
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1882 to restrict immigration in the US. Despite their contribution to the railroads this act prevented the Chinese from becoming citizines
  • Sinking of Lusitania

    Germans places a warning to Americans traveling on war zone waters after placing submarines in the waters of Britain. The US were trade partners with Britain and ignored the warning which Germany took the opportunity to sink the Lusitania and more Americans changed from neutral to against Germany
  • Zimmerman Telegram

    The Zimmerman Telegram was decoded by the british and handed over to the US. The telegram had instructions about what to do if the US were to get involved in WWI. This event provided evidence for German aggression and was originally intended for the German ambassador in Mexico so that there would be a Mexican attack on the US financed by the Germans
  • Sedition Act

    The Sedition Act made it illegal to publish abusive language towards the government during a time of war. Some said this was a violation of the first amendment but the government argued that it was necessary to take extreme measures during a time of war
  • 18th and 21st Amendments

    The 18th amendment was passed to stop the selling and production of alcohol in the US. The government thought that Prohibition would decrease crime in America when that proved not to work when bootlegging became a thing the 21st amendment was passed to ratify the 18th amendment
  • Immigration Act of 1924

    In attempt to limit the amount of immigrants in the US the immigration act was passed it increased the tax immigrants had to pay to enter the states and also required immigrants 16 years of age to have basic reading and writing skills
  • John Scopes -The Monkey Trial

    John Scopes was sent to trial for teaching the theory of evolution. It was against Tennessee law to teach the creation of man other than what is says in the bible. Scopes was charged with a fine but this event is significant because it challenged the education system
  • Red Scare

    The Red Scare was a widespread of fear of communists by Americans during the cold war.There were ma ny investigations trying to expose communist spies in the federal government many were accused falsely but their reputations never recovered. The tension began to ease around the 1950s
