  • The passed act of 1834

    The federal government had passed an act that designated the entire Great Plains as one emormous reservation, or land set aside for Native American Tribes.
  • The changed policy of 1850

    The governmment changed its policy and created treaties that defined space bounderies for each tribe.
  • The Massacre at Sand creek in 1864

    in response to the U.S commander in the west sent a telegram to the militia colonel John Chivington. The Chivington and his troops decended on the Cheyenne and Arapaho- about 200 worriors and 500 women and children- camped at Sand Creek. The attack at dawn in 1864 killed over 150 women and children.
  • Crazy Horse/ Lodge Trail Ridge

    In December the warrior Crazy Horse ambushed Captain William J. Fetterman and his company at Lodge Trail Ridge. Over 80 soldiers were killed.
  • Treaty of Fort Laramie

    Stated that the Sioux agreed to live on a reservation along the Missouri river. It was forced on the leaders of the Sioux.
  • The GOLD RUSH

    In 1874 Colonel George A. Custer reported that the Black hills had gold "from the roots down" and then the gold rish started.

    Red River War

    The U.S Army responded to yet another war that lasted six years against the Kiowa and Comanche that led to the red river war. They herded people of friendy tribes onto reservations while opening fire onto others.
  • Sioux Failed

    In 1876 the Sioux were beaten and the Sitting Bull and a few followers took refuge in Canada were they stayed until 1881.
  • The Dawes Act

    Congress passed The Dawes Act aiming to "Americanize" the Native Americans. The Act broke up the reservation and gave some of the reservation land to individual Native Americans. 160 acres to each head of the houshold and 80 acres to each unmarried adult.
  • Wounded Knee

    The seventh Calvary- cuters old regiment- rounded up about 350 starving and freezing Soiux and took them to a camp st Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. The next day the soldiers demanded that the Native Americans give up all of their weapons. Then one shot was fired, by a side unknown. Then the Soldiers opened fire with a deadly canon.
