the canadian encyclopediaWhile France and Britain were at war Napoleon ordered a blockade of all ships hoping to ruin Britains trade with Europe. The Americans view the British colonies in North America as vulnerable to be taken over. The tensions that the British blockade created led to attacks on American ships. By June 18,1812 President Madison declared war against Great Britain.
If the American President had't declared war on Great Britain, the War of 1812 would never have occurred -
Battle of Queenston Heights
Battle of Queenston Heights encyclpediaThis battle took place near Queenston in modern day Ontario. This location is a part of the Niagra escarpment. It a steep ridge that would be difficult for the Americans to claim. This was the first major battle fought in the War of 1812. The British won the battle but, unfortunately Sir Isaac Brock, the British leader, was killed by an American sniper on his way to Fort George. It is an important event in Canadian history because it was the first battlethe American revolution. -
Sir Isaac Brock
Sir Isaac Bock encyclopediaSir Isaac Brock was the Liutendant Govenor of Upper Canada. He fought at the Siege of Fort Detroit, and the Battle of Queenston Heights. The Americans needed to win the battle to get a foot hold on the British side of the Niagra. The British did well killing most of the American forces. Unfortunately though Brock was shot and soon died on his way to Fort George. Us Canadians should care for Brock because, we treated him like a true Canadian. -

Battle of York encyclopediaThe Battle of York is the cause of Burning of Washington.It caused a lot of problems. Like, how Americans looted the town without withdrawing first. None the less the Americans won. It is important because it teaches us that we lose sometimes thats and that's life. It is important to our history because, thats what led us to the burning of the white house. The Americans also sent the capture of the military stores away on May 2 but were then penned in York harbour by a gale. -

The Battle of Stoney Creek encyclopediaThe Battle of Stoney Creek was lead by John Vincent and John Harvey. It was suppose to be a stealthy attack, until, one of John Norton's six nations men, shot a sentry with a bow and then kkilled him with a tomahawk, which caused him to scream. It also didn't help that Vincent's sent a cheer, which woke the Americans. Even though the Americans had more men, Vincents group still won even though he went missing. If it wasn't For Harveys and Vincents Leadership they could've lost the war -
Laura Secord
Laura Secord encyclopediaIs a Canadian heorine of the War of 1812. She was known for walking 32km out of American occupied territory in 1813 to warn the British of an impending American Attack.In 1813 the Americans invaded the Niagra Peninsula, including Queenston. She over heard the Americans talking about how they were going to attack the where James FitzGibbon and his Green Tigers. So thats when she set off to go find and tell FitzGibbon the news. She was also paid 100 pounds for her service. -
Battle of the Beaver Dams
Beaver dams encyclopediaLead by Lieutendant James FitzGibbon (British), who ambushed the Americans. The only reason how they ambushed the American troops were by Laura Secord who traveled 20 miles from Queenston just to tell FitzGibbon and his men the news of the attack. She knew it because she overheard the Americans over talking and saying how they were going to attack that post. If Laura Secord didn't tell FitzGibbon and his men, he would've beeen killed or captured and lost the battle. -
Tecumseh
Tecumseh encyclopediaTecumseh was a folk hero to the American Aboringinal and Canadian history. He fought at the Siege of Fort Detroit and the battle of the Thames. The events that caused this to happen were that the Americans kept on pushing the Natives West ward and they killed them or kicked them out of their homes. So Tecumseh created his own tribal confederacy, and him and his Confederacy, went to the British side. Tecumseh also became good friends with Brock. He soon died during the Battle of the Thames. -
Lundy's Lane
Lundy's Lane encyclopediaThe battle of Lundy's lane was the bloodiest battle of the war. The Americans crossed the Niagra river and turned North. Meanwhile, the British went out of Fort George and meet them there. The battle was very hard because it was at night and you could only see your target with the flash from muskets and pistols. It is important for us because it was the bloodiest battle on Canadian soil. Both sides knew that they were low on supplies, equipment, and men. in the end the British say they won. -
Burning of Washington
Burning of Washington encyclopediaThe burning of Washington, was retaliation for the Americans burning York.Even though they burned Washington, they only burned the Goverment Buildings. Like the White house, the D.C. newspaper, burned the Treasury,and the other public buildings. The only building that was still there was the Patent Office. If the British didnt burn Washington the Americans would likely keep on burning more of our Citys in Upper Canada. Also the British were the only ones who burned the White house -
Treaty of Ghent
The British and the Americans were tired of fighting. So both sides met secretly in Ghent which is today called Belgium. They negotiated until they came up with terms that they both could agree on. Fighting did not stop immediately. In some parts of North America, battles continued into 2015 such as the Battle of New Orleans. This treaty did mark the end of the war; however, it is known as the war that nobody one. -

It occurred 8km east- southeast of New Orleans. Both sides still didn't hear about the "Treaty of Ghent" ,yet. The battle lasted till January 18, 1815 when all British forces retreated finally putting an end to the battle of New Orleans. it is important to our history because would never see the smart thinking that Andrew Jackson did in the war.
