This War of 1812 is significant because it effectively eliminated the Indians' ability to resist American expansion east of the Mississippi River. The war also allowed the United States to rewrite its boundaries with Spain and solidify control over the lower Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, and it also never allowed the Federalist Party to recover from its opposition to the war. -
U.S. troops capture and burn the city of York
This event was an easy win for the Americans at the time and would cost them many of their men who were killed or wounded. So even though the battle did little to advance either side’s dominant control of Canadian waters, It was still an easy victory and it boosted American morale, providing motivation for continued attempts at expansion into Canada. -
The sieges of Fort Meigs
During the first siege of this battle, nearly 600 men fighting for Britain died. The British was forced to withdraw, leaving the Americans with a victory. The British also attempted a second siege of the fort. Hiding outside of the fort in the nearby woods, Natives, staged a mock battle. But the American army fortified itself in the fort. Eventually a strong thunderstorm came and forced the British and Native Americans to again withdraw, giving America two victories. -
