Washington's Proclamation of Neutrality
Geroge Washington states that the United States would remain neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britain. -
Jay Treaty
An agreement between the United States and Great Britain that lessened the hostility. It helped establish a base for America in which a national economy could be built that guaranteed commercial prosperity. -
Washington's Farewell Address
Washington warned about political parties and staying neutral which were not met in the future. Washington hoped to maintain a strong national government, promote patriotism, and keep morality in the government. -
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
This was a British attack on the American frigate Chesapeake that tried to capture three Americans and one British deserter. The three Americans had been forced into involuntary service with the British. With a British deserter, they discovered a way out which as a result ended them boarding the Chesapeake. -
Embargo Act 1807
U.S President Thomas Jefferson requested the drafting of this act. As a result, it was passed by U.S Congress, it was for the banning of imports and exports to Britain in order for them to achieve the goal of getting Britain to stop seizing ships, but unfortunately, this act didn't work. The embargo act was repealed and replaced with the Non-Intercourse Act instead. -
Tecumseh
Chief Tecumseh tried to negotiate with the American government in order to stop western expansion into native lands. He created a confederacy of native tribes and represented the interests of many natives. When negotiation didn't work and violence erupted, he went north to ally with the British. -
Impressment of sailors
The impressment of American sailors into the royal Navy or in other words the recruitment by force. This event really set the stone for the war because it affected the U.S severely. -
War of 1812 Begins
The official act of war beginning with Great Britain, signed by President James Maddison. -
War Hawks
Young politicians from the West and South that were led by a new speaker of the House Henry Clay. This group of Jeffersonian Republicans wanted a military confrontation to correct American grievances. -
Tecumseh
In the War of 1812, he joined British forces for the capture of Detroit and the invasion of Ohio. A battle against William Henry Harrison’s U.S. troops which ended in Tecumseh’s defeat and death. -
Hartford Convention
Federalist delegates joined in Hartford, Connecticut to discuss the impact of 1812 (there were 26 delegates). These meetings were held in secrecy, and some discussions were aired, but the major emphasis was to purpose constitutional changes to prevent similar crises from occurring in the future. -
Treaty of Ghent
A peace treaty ending the war of 1812 between Great Britain and the U.S, it was signed on Christmas Eve. The treaty was ratified by the U.S Congress in February of 1815. -
Battle of New Orleans
The last major battle of the war of 1812, under the command of General Andrew Jackson, American forces successfully fought off the invading British army.
