Impressment of American Soldiers by British
DATE: July 15, 1803
British ships often practiced impressment, which forced captured American sailors to serve in the Royal Navy. ONE of the main causes of the War of 1812. -
Bombardment of Fort McHenry
The British had bombarded it from their ships, trying to get the fort to surrender. Francis Scott Key, an American who was being held on one of the British ships, watched the bombardment. He was pleasantly surprised when, at sunrise, he saw that the fort was still there, with the American flag still flying proudly over it. He was moved to write a poem, which when combined with music became our national anthem--The Star Spangled Banner.

The British forces had captured Washington, DC, during the War of 1812 and had set fire to the White House.

Only thing that was saved was a portrait of George Washington which was grabbed by Dolley Madison (while running out of the burning building), and from being looted by British troops during the war of 1812. -
Taking of the City of Washington
On the 26 of August, General Ross, had come to realization on his untenable hold on the capital area, and in turn ordered a withdrawal from Washington. The next day, President James Madison returned to a charred & burning Washington and then vowed to rebuild the city. The original architect of the White House, James Hoban had then completed reconstruction of the executive mansion in 1817. -
Battle of Baltimore
The Battle of Baltimore was when the U.S. withstood the siege and was not taken by the British. After the burning of Washington, this had signified that the war was not a complete defeat for the U.S. and the National Anthem (was written) -
Star-Bangled Banner
These (4) verses had gained a special significance during the Civil War, a time when many Americans turned to music to express their feelings for the flag and the ideals and values it represented. -
