President Madison Takes Office
There was a lot of tension between America and britain when James Madison took office. The Americans hated Britain for arming Northwest Native Americans. they also hated then for the continued impressment of American sailors. -
War Hawks Take Power
In 1810 two strong nationalists and war hawks named Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina took power of the House of Representatives. Now that the war hawks had power many followed their beliefs. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
People disliked Britain more and more. In spring Britain declared that they would keep impressing American sailors. Also Native Americans were attacking western settlements and that was America's breaking point. -
Congress Declares War On Britain
As said earlier America met it's breaking point. The Native Americans and the British wouldn't stop. On the 18th of June 1812 Congress declared war on the British. -
America is not Ready for War
Because of Jefferson's spending cuts America was at a disadvantage. The army was made of only 7,000 men. The navy was very small to and made out of 16 warships at the ready. -
Britain Blockades American Ports
Early in the war the British set up a blockade on the American coast.By 1814 the British had 135 ships in it. -
Invasion of Canada
General William Hull invaded Canada from Detroit. Hull feared that he didn't have enough troops and retreated, but he and his were captured by the British. -
USS Constitution Scores a Victory
In a sea battle against the USS Consitiution and the British ship Guerriere the British could not sink the Constitution because of its reinforced hull. Giving it the nickname "Old Ironsides". Because of that the British had little to no chance of victoy, so the Consitution sank the British. -
Battle of Lake Erie
During the three hour battle at Put-In-Bay Officer Oliver Hazard Perry switched ships mid-battle when his ship was badly damaged until he had won. When he did win he shouted out this message: "We have met the enemy and they are ours" and the British where forced to leave Detriot. -
Battle of Thames
As the British retreated to Canada, but as they did General William Henry Harrison and his troops followed them to Canada and defeated them at the Battle of Thames. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Andrew Jackson and his troops defeated the Creeks wining the Battle of Horshoe bend. The treaty that finised the war made the Creeks give up ton of land. -
Washigton D.C Attacked & Burned
The British had a new strategy, that strategy was to attack Washaton D.C. But before the British forced their way in first lady Dolly Madison packed up and left. The British marched to the White House and lit it on fire. -
Attack on Baltimore
After Washington D.C the British moved to Baltimore and their first target was Fort McHenry where the Americans held them off and beat them. -
The Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key saw the attack and wrote "The Star Spangled Banner" on the back of an envolope which later became the national anthem. -
Hartford Convention
A group of Federalists met in Hartford, Conneticut and discussed secede from the U.S but ended when word of a treaty came. -
Treaty of Ghent
In Ghent, Belgium a treaty was signed ending the war. -
Battle of New Orleans
Before word of a treaty came to the U.S one last battle was fought between Andrew Jackson and the British and Andrew Jackson took an amazing victory.
