President Madison Takes Office
James Madison was a quiet man. He wanted to keep his country out of war, and some Americans believed his ideas were too timid. He also help to pass the Bill of Rights, and to write the Constitution. -
War Hawks Take Power
One goal of the War Hawks was to conquer Canada.William Hull moved American troops into Canada. Isaac Brock used some scare tactics to scare the Americans off, such as dressing his soldiers in red coats to look like trained British Troops. -

The war did not come at a good time for Britian. The United States was not prepared either, they thought they would win the war because the British were in war with another country. Jefferson's spending cuts had weakened the military. The Americans Army was small with fewer than 7,000 men. -

The Federalists disliked having a republican as president. The delegates threatened to leave the union if the war continued.The delegates met in Hartford, Ct, most of them federalists. It ended quickly because of the Treaty of Ghent. -
Treaty of Ghent
The British had become tired of war. They started to talk about peace treaties. The treaty took a while to reach America. On Christmas Eve, the two sides signed the Treaty of Ghent. -
Battle of New Orleans
This battle was the final battle of 1812. The british planned to attack New Orleans. The British attack back fired, and the Americans won.
