    Magna Hungaria

    Magyars lived in Magna hungaria around 500 BC and 500 AD but due to overpopulation in the area the majority of the population had to leave. The 7 Magyar tribes were established here.

    Levédia (8th century)

    The Magyars migrates here from Magna Hungaria. This area is situated between the Don and Donets rivers and the Azov Sea, but this territory was already inhabited by the Khazars so the Magyars had to pay taxes. The Magyars mat the first monotheistic religion which was Jewish.

    Etelköz (9th century)

    Magyars moved here from Levédia and this place was situated between the rivers Danube (Etel), Dnieper and Dniester. The Magyarsorganized Dual Principality based on the Khazar model from Levédia. The Pechenegs attacked the Magyars and outnumbered them and because Etelköz was indefensible the Magyars had to move.The Legend of the Blood Oath originates from here and it is the symbol of unity between the Magyar tribes. Árpád was elected to Grand Prince of the "Hetumoger" tribes.

    Conquest of the Carpathian Basin
    The main army entered the basin at Verecke pass led by Árpád. This place was also already inhabited by Moravians, Bavarians, Bulgars, Franks and Avars.

    Battle of Pozsony

    Battle of Pozsony
    The Magyars defeated the Bavarians and the Bulgars and with this campaign the occupation of the Carpathian Basin was finished.

    Incursions

    The Magyar tribes/clans organized incursions towards mainly western, but also some southren territories. Their main reason to attack western places was because those were not united and weaker so they were easier to attack, also there were more cities which meant more targets and
    more monasteries which were richer. The goal of these incursions was plundering, intimidating the neighbours with psychological terror and possibly conquering possible new territories.

    Battle of Merseburg

    Battle of Merseburg
    This battle was the first in which the Magyars were defeated. They were defeated by Henry the Fowler and it was possible because the tactics of the Magyars became well known so the opponent army could come up with a plan beforehand.

    Battle of Augsburg
    In this battle the Magyars were defeated by Otto I who was the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. After this, Magyars decided to settle down in the Carpathian Basin and not continue the incursions.

    Géza became prince (fejedelem) and he ended the independence of tribal and clan leaders and started to centralise the power and started to integrate Hungary into Christian Western Europe.
