The purpose of this film was to explain the difficulties of growing up and the challenges associated with becoming a teenager and it was created to help young girls/people as they navigated it. After the release of the book, this was a time in popular culture that the book had completely succeeded. The main inspiration of this, like the novels, was Jane Austen.
