The UN splits North Vietnam, controlled by Ho Chi Minh and South Vietnam, controlled by Ngo Dinh Diem at the 17th parallel. -
Death of Ngo Dinh Diem
The South Vietnamese leader, who was corrupt and disliked by his people, is assassinated, causing concern for who will become the next leader. -
Gulf of Tonkin
The USS Maddox is allegedly attacked by a Vietnamese patrol boat, leading the US into conflict without an official declaration of war. -
TET offensive
An attack concept used by the North Vietnamese by attacking the enemy by surprise. It was named after a Vietnamese holiday when the first of the attacks began. -
Two assassinations
Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy are assassinated. -
Policy of Vietnamization begins
Richard Nixon begins the policy to decrease US involvement in the conflict by essentially handing the fighting back to the South Vietnamese. -
Kent State Massacre
The National Guard fire upon and kill some of the war protesters at Kent State University causing controversy about the US military across the country. -
War ends
Under Ford's presidency the war ends as North Vietnam takes over South Vietnam.
